Nowadays, there are a large number of urbanization problems in the world. The main problems in cities are caused by car habits, poverty, overcrowded, pollution and unemployment. Although there are many methods to address those issues, there are still problems that cannot be completely solved, such as over-population and the cost of public transportation. Therefore, the problems of urbanization can be met quite a lot of policies of sustainable development.

First of all, people’s reliance on cars for transportation is one of the problems in urbanization. More and more people moved from rural to urban areas in order to earn more money and improve their quality of life. Many people have their own private cars, which have caused traffic jams on the highway, thus exhaust emissions also pollute the environment. A policy of sustainable development can solve the car habit problem. The complete system, called the Metro (Thisdell 123), is a new network project of underground transportation with new routes in Los Angeles, California. Because of a large number of populations, current transport planning is difficult. So the Railway Company persuaded the United States to open up Metro link in order to avoid this freeway traffic. It is also a solution to the transportation problems in urban areas.

Poverty is the other problem of urbanization. As an example, the urban populations of Africa will increase over 1 million in the next few years, so Africa is facing a financial crisis and global downturn because of a lack of foreign aid and government accountability with money received (Glennie 116). If Africa gets enough financial aid from wealthy countries, people who live in poverty will be less poor. Actually, wealthy countries could make sure the aid money is spent the right way because many poor country governments’ staffs misuse rich country’s financial aid. So leaders of wealthy countries could use a lot of positive measures to help Africans reduce poverty problems. Sustainable development, such as government-to government aid, is an important way to support poor countries.

Furthermore, housing problems have appeared in the urban areas. One example is the population increase in China from the Second World War to 1949. A lot of refugees and illegal immigrants crossed the coastline into the border areas of Hong Kong, and a large number of poorer families built their houses in the squatter areas. Because of a large number of immigrants, there wasn’t enough space to support the population. In the end, the Hong Kong government has decided to build high-density housing and public housing to reduce the problems of the housing shortage (Chaffey 133). In other words, dispersing population is another mehod of sustainable development. A country’s governments can separate people to live in different places in order to avoid a large number of people overcrowding and a lack of space for normal life in urban areas. Population change is a big deal when squatters move into new territories for employment and development, but a government can help alleviate this potential problem.

After that, unemployment continues to be a kind of urban problem. Large numbers of people move from rural to urban areas in order to get better work and life. Also, a lot of illegal immigrants, who comes from foreign countries, prefer to live in the city, which creates competition, resulting in a lot of unemployment. With increasing competition, there have been some innovations to encourage employment, called “informal sector” (Ridout 129). For example, companies can add services just as newspaper sellers and food sellers, which increase company sales performance and will bring greater benefits to the company. The national governments should realize that the informal sector can supply more opportunities to unemployed people and may lead to the economic growth in urban areas.
