Removal of a ring of a bark from the trunk of a tree eventually kills it because

1) Water can not go up
2) Fungi and insects attack exposed parts
3) Food does not travel towards root
4) Air blocks the xylem​

I think 3rd option is right, because removal of a ring of a bark from the trunk is known as gridling.

due to gridling phloem tissue just below the bark is badly affected and food doesn't travels towards root.
