Wastewater discharged from the distillery plants even after anaerobic and aerobic treatment possesses distinct colour, which is not aesthetically acceptable to the general public. Although significant reduction of COD is achieved through biological treatment process, a substantial amount of colour still remains due to the presence of non-biodegradable chemical ingredients. So the colour in the waste streams should not be above the acceptable level before discharging. In the present study several methods to remove colour from distillery wastewater have been investigated. Experimental results show that a combined treatment of lime and alum gives significant removal of colour. Almost 99% of colour can be removed from distillery wastewater by optimum dosing of lime and alum.
