A commercial granular activated carbon was modified with sodium hydroxide followed by a cationic surfactant to increase its effeciency for nitrate removal from water. Psychochemial properties of activated carbon and treated activated carbon were determined by N2 adsorption isothermal data and modeled with several mathematical models. The result showed that the combination of two treatments could improve the nitrate removal effeciency, which is maily attributed to the modification by cationic surfactant .
