1st draw a number line (0-1) with equal units (u can take 1 unit = 5cm. (0= A and 1= B)

Then draw a perpendicular (straight line) at 1. Mark 1 unit from that line (point C).

Now join C to A. it will form a right angle triangle.

Using pythagoras theorem,

a²+b²= c²

1²+1²= c²

1²+1²= c² 2= c²

1²+1²= c² 2= c² √2= c.

Now take a compass and keep it at point A. Cut an arc crossing C into the number line. This Arc is √2 on the number line.

Ur figure will look like the pic provided.
