Given :    A    2     4     6

-    5    2      B    7

_______________

    1     C      D    E

To find :  replace each letter with the correct numeral

Solution:

    A    2     4     6

-    5    2      B    7

_______________

    1     C      D    E

6 is greater than 7 so it will borrow 1 from 4

16 - 7 = 9

=>  E = 9       &  4  remains  3

  A     2     3

-   5    2    B

___________

    1    C      D

E = 9  hence  C  can not be 9    so there is no borrow  from  2

2 - 2 = 0    C =  0      and also there is no  borrow from  A

A - 5 = 1

=> A   = 6

    6   2     3

-    5   2     B

___________

     1    0     D

So B  & D can be  1 or   2

            6   2   4   6

   -        5   2    1    7

         ___________

            1    0    2    9

            6   2   4   6

   -        5   2   2    7

         ___________

            1    0    1    9

A = 6   ,    C   =  0    E  = 9

B  & D are  1  & 2
