Answer:

a) Thermal expansion is a disadvantage as the railway tracks expand in summers which may cause accidents. This is why gaps are left at some distances in railway tracks.

Thermal contraction is a disadvantage as the electric wires contract in winters and so they have to be loosely tied so that they do not tear apart.

b) Thermal expansion and contraction are helpful as they are used fit rims in wheels.
