Objective:
The Healthy Campus Committee (HCC) of Gandhinagar Institute of Technology organized ‘Cancer
Awareness Programme’ on 9th February 2017, for the purpose of creating awareness of Cancer
among students so that they may contribute to fight against fatal disease of cancer. The event was
aimed at raising awareness about the disease so that millions of deaths caused by it every year can be
prevented. It is observed in the present scenario that college students are vulnerable to tobacco
abuses of cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco and many such other kinds. It is estimated that
cigarette smoking accounts for about one-third of all types of cancer, including 90 percent of lung
cancer cases. Smokeless tobacco such as chewing tobacco and snuff also increases the risk of cancer,
especially oral cancers. Both behavioral interventions like counselling and medication can help
addicts quit their habit.
Programme:
In the morning session, certain events like ‘Critical Thinking’, ‘Graffiti’ and ‘Just a Minute’ were
organized to create awareness of cancer. Many students participated in this event from reputed
institutes like L D College of Engineering, Alpha College of Engineering & Technology, Hasmukh
Goswami College of Engineering, and Master of Social Work (MSW) Dept., Gujarat University
apart from GIT. The students presented their creative ideas on varied topics in Critical Thinking.
That way their elocution skills and ability to solve problems also were given a platform. The event
was judged by Mr Abhishek Agravat, writer of many novel articles, songs, and plays, presently
working with Health Department, Government of Gujarat. The event named ‘Graffiti’ provided the
students with the opportunity to paint their innovative and thought provoking ideas on cancer
awareness theme through their sketches and paintings on the wall. The students performed various
tasks related to fitness and sports in ‘Just a Minute’ event. All the faculties, staff and students put on
the purple ribbons to spread awareness and support people living with the trauma of cancer.
Dr N M Bhatt, graced the occasion by delivering his speech emphasizing on the need and
significance of the awareness of cancer among the people especially the upcoming generation who is
still at the early stage of being aware of the hazards of this demon like disease. Shri Hari Om

students to stay healthy and shared his noble views on cancer awareness and its prevention. He was
accompanied by Mr. Sagar Brahmbhatt & Mr. Ajaz Shaikh, frontrunners of Healthy Campus. Dr.
