Amritsar Train Accident
The celebrations of Dussehra festival in Amritsar turned sour when a speeding train mowed many people standing on the tracks watching the Dussehra celebrations on October 19, 2018. The tragedy happened near Joda Phatak in Amritsar.
59 people were killed and more than 100 were badly injured. Hundreds of people were standing and enjoying the burning of effigy of the demon, Ravana when the tragedy took place. The news sent a wave of sadness and mourning all across the state of Punjab and the entire northern India.
Captain Amrinder Singh, the CM of the state announced compensation of rupees 5 lakh for the families of the victims killed in the accident and free medical treatment of the injured ones; Central Government announced compensation of rupees 2 lakh for the ones who were killed.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Minister for Local Government, Tourism and Cultural Affairs in the Punjab State Government also announced that he and his wife, Mrs. Navjot Kaur Sidhu would adopt the children who had lost parents in the accident. Mrs. Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest of the Dussehra Celebrations where the tragic accident took place.
The accident brings forth the poor management of resources, mismanagement, and carelessness of people, the Government, and organizers during such celebrations.
