“Side effects include itching, dryness, exfoliation of skin, erosions of skin and eczema. Skin abrasions can occur due to scrubbing of skin to remove the colours,” Poojary said, adding, “Secondary bacterial infections and aggravation of acne and pre-existing eczema can also occur. People with dry skin and pre existing skin disorders need to be extra cautious.

“Chemical colours when applied to the skin can cause loss of hair (alopecia). Contact of chemical colors in eyes can cause irritation, watering of eyes, corneal abrasions and conjunctivitis. In rare cases, systemic side effects can occur due to chemicals which can manifest as breathlessness and cyanosis,” she added.

Holi celebrations turn into a gloomy situation in Pune on Tuesday where a minor boy suffered from burn injuries. The shocking incident took place when an 11-year-old boy threw cleaning liquid on the minor boy in the presence of adults on Tuesday morning at a residential complex in the Pimpri Chinchwad area of Pune.

On 10 March, the country was celebrating the festival of colours and amid Holi celebrations in Pune at around 10 am, a group of children residing in the residential complex was playing with colours. During the celebrations, the 11-year-old boy allegedly threw a cleaning liquid on an 8-year-old boy.

An investigation by Police revealed that the 11-year-old boy was not aware that the liquid was harmful and hence he threw the liquid on a child while playing with colours. The incident came to light when the minor boy complained of a burning sensation to his parents.

Soon, parents found some burn marks on the back and hands of the minor boy. After which the boy rushed to the hospital where necessary treatment was administered to him. Later, the police also informed the police about the incident.

According to the report of The Indian Express, Dnyaneshwar Sabale, Sangvi police station inspector said, "Primary probe shows that an 11-year-old boy had picked up a bottle of colourful liquid kept on the premises of a neighbouring building, which was undergoing maintenance. "

After the complaint filed by the family of the minor child, Police booked the 11-year-old boy for negligent handling of substance and causing hurt. As per the senior officials, a warning will be issued to the 11-year-old boy and he will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
