To sensitize the youth of today and inculcate in them the values of empathy and compassion, i.e. –the capacity to feel what it is to live in somebody else’s skin and feel their pain, Manav Rachna International School, at Charmwood organized a visit to the Guru Vishram Vriddha Ashram situated in the bylanes of Gautampuri, New Delhi as a part of the integrated FA-3 project work titled –“ Senior Citizens “ for the class 10 students .

On 6th December 2014, Around 40 students accompanied by three teachers – Ms. Maneesha Kapur, Ms. Paromita and Mr. Dileep Kumar, paid a visit to the old age home carrying thoughtful gifts of blankets, woollens, biscuits etc. for the 145 inmates. Dr. Bhagat, the manager of the home explained in details about the background of the home and how he manages to rescue the abandoned old people from railway stations, bus stops, footpaths , market places etc. Many are even dropped off at the home by their own kith and kin. He enlightened the students on the mental and physical state of the patients stating most of them suffer from dementia or Alzheimers disease. They donot remember their past or their addresses and are unable to recognize or name their family members. Students raised countless queries related to the inmates and their care.

They were escorted and shown all the facilities that were made available to the senior citizens like – clinic, physiotherapy centre, prayer hall, bedroom, kitchen etc. The students of class 10 spent some thought provoking moments with the inmates who have been either neglected or become unwanted by their children, who treat them as useless appendages.

It was really a poignant experience for all the students to visit the old age home and interact with its inmates. This visit was a huge learning experience for the young citizens and after spending two valuable hours, the students vowed to do something for senior citizens and contribute towards the betterment of their condition.
