KANYASHREE PRAKALPA
The Kanyashree Prokalpa is one of the pioneering initiatives taken by the Government of West Bengal to improve the life and the status of the girls of the state. To realize the dream once dreamt by social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Vidyasagar, the Deptt. of Women Development and Social Welfare has formulated kanyashree Prakalpa.
It is a conditional cash transfer scheme for the benefit of female student reading in class 8 to 12 in Government sponsored schools of West Bengal. Girl students between 14 to 18 years age belonging to family with low income is eligible to get a grant of rupees 750 every year for continuing their studies. Once the student passed the HS examination she will be given one time grant of 37500 whenever she completes 8 years of age.
The specific objectives of the scheme are--
1. discouraging early marriage of girls
2.reducing the incident of dropout among girls
3.eradicating malnutrition of girl child
4.preventing trafficking and exploitation of the girl child .
14th august is celebrated as Kanyashree Day to promote the scheme. This flagship scheme has been awarded the United Nation Public Service award. Apart from this it has also received many national awards. Thus Kanyashree has now become Biswashree.
