God has created all men equal. It is for us to follow any religion we wish to in a free society. In a country like India, religious, linguistic and cultural diversity makes us unique and this variety has earned it respect across the world. It is, therefore, quite disconcerting when communal riots break out between people of different caste and religious groups. Unless the Government and the Administration takes corrective measures sooner rather than later, our society will become more and more fragmented, affecting our growth and development in the coming days.
The majority community and the major castes should be taught to be more tolerant and not give a communal colour to anything that goes wrong around them. The criminals who ignite flames of inter-community clashes must be arrested under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code. Their political, religious or other leaders, who add fuel to the fire, must be punished without fear or favour.
Most of all, we must teach our children to respect all, irrespective of their caste, creed or colour. So also must our religious leaders drill into us the advantages that will accrue if we maintain communal harmony.
