Mr. Sriram, Fragrance Operations Head, addressed the students and introduced about the IFF. He explained about the functioning of this Unit. Later Mr. Rajasekhar, Safety officer, explained the different steps exmployed for the safety of the unit. Most of the raw materials used in the preparation of fragrance are highly inflammable. He also warned the students how to reach a safe assembly point if any accident happens in the unit during visit.

Later Mr.Arunachalam, Manager-Quality Control explained the agenda of the day. The agenda was training on:

Basic perfumery

Fragrance analysis

Chemicals behind fragrance

Quality function in IFF

Analytical instruments in IFF

Plant tour

During this session, students interacted with the Manager very effectively. Particularly about the chemicals behind the fragrance and their identification, isolation and storage. Then Mr.Srinivasan, Assistant Manager, explained the chemistry of the fragrant compounds. He mainly focused on the storage of the raw materials after procuring. He explained how to store the low boiling liquids in cold storage plant and air sensitive compounds under nitrogen atmosphere.

After this session students were taken to industrial trip in two batches. Both the batches were taken to Quality control unit and production unit. During the trip students gained practical knowledge about the handling of the raw materials having different characteristics and properties. Many of the points explained theoretically in the first session were explained again practically. In Quality control unit, students were exposed to Gas Chromatography. They were explained how to find the refractive index for a sample which is very important in analyzing the purity of the compound.

After this session all the students were offered a nice lunch. On behalf of the Department of Chemistry, SRM University Mr.Sriram, Operations Head, IFF was honored with a small memento. All the students expressed their thanks to the officials for the opportunity given.

This trip was highly useful for the students in terms of practical knowledge about the fragmenting compounds. This trip will also be helpful for them to find placement opportunities in such industries.
