35 Killed, 250 Injured In Utkal Express Mishap
There appears to be no let-up in the jinx that has been relentlessly stalking the Indian Railways. In a yet another accident, at least 35 people were killed and over 250 injured in Sunday’s Utkal train tragedy in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. The train was on its routine journey from Puri to Haridwar. Thirteen coaches of the train were derailed around 5:45 p.m. in Khatauli, about 100 kms from, New Delhi. The train at that time was speeding at 100 KMP.
Local people along with the rescue and medical teams worked untiringly to help the trapped and injured people from the derailed coaches. As many as hundred ambulances were rushed to the spot of accident. According to some eyewitness, the cause of the accident was the repair work in progress on the track. A section of the track was found missing. It was alleged that the accident occurred owing to the carelessness and lack of proper communication between the authorities and the track maintenance department.
Railways Minister ordered an inquiry into the incident. Four people were suspended, three others sent on leave and one official was transferred based on an early probe. The Government has declared all financial help to the families of the deceased and the injured ones.
