Direct speech quotes the exact words spoken. While writing direct speech, we must place the words spoken in quotation marks ("...").

Example: She said, "I am ready."

Indirect speech or Reported speech is used to report the words spoken by someone in the past.

Example: She said she was ready.

DIRECT TO REPORTED SPEECH AND VICE VERSA FOR DIRECT SPEECH IN SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE - DEFINITION

DIRECT TO REPORTED SPEECH AND VICE VERSA FOR DIRECT SPEECH IN PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE - DEFINITION

While converting direct speech to reported speech, all present tenses in the direct speech are changed to the corresponding past tenses in the reported speech. So, present continuous tense becomes past continuous tense.
