1. Mondy is sitting in the cafe where James works. He tells her, "I work in this cafe almost every day. But yesterday I saw a famous TV presenter here for the first time.
She was eating an ice-cream at the table where you are sitting now."

Direct speech quotes the exact words spoken. While writing direct speech, we must place the words spoken in quotation marks ("...").
Example: She said, "I am ready."
Indirect speech or Reported speech is used to report the words spoken by someone in the past.
Example: She said she was ready.

When the direct speech is in the simple present tense, we must change all present tenses to the corresponding past tenses in the reported speech.
Example:
She said, "I am going." - Direct
She said she was going. - Reported

While converting direct speech to reported speech, all present tenses in the direct speech are changed to the corresponding past tenses in the reported speech. So, present continuous tense becomes past continuous tense.

He said that the king was waiting. - Indirect
