Answer:-

Direct speech: Johan said, "I love this town".

Indirect speech: Johan said that he loves that town.

Extra information:

There are two ways of reporting the words of a speaker.

  • We may quote it within quotation marks " " the speaker's own actual words.

This is called direct speech.

or

  • We may report (the substance of) what the speaker said without quoting his exact words.

This is called Indirect (or Reported)

This is called Indirect (or Reported) Speech or narration.

You will note that the reporting portion is the Principal Clause and the actual speech of the Reported Speech is the Subordinate Noun Clause.

Study the construction of the following:

Direct: He said, "Mohan has recovered from illness".

Indirect: He said that Mohan had recovered from illness.

Speech

(1)Direct

Principal Clause

(Reporting portion)

He said

(comma)

Subordinate Clause (Change of speech)

(Actual Speech)

(within inverted commas)

"Mohan has recovered from illness."

Speech

(2) Indirect

Principal Clause

(Reporting portion)

He said

that (Instead of using inverted commas, we can show that someone's speech is being described by using the word “that” to introduce the statement first.)

Subordinate Clause (Change of speech)

(Reported Speech)

Mohan had recovered from illness.

The change from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech(Reported speech) is a Transformation, i. e., change of form without change of meaning.

Note the following point in the forgoing example:

  1. Said is called the Reporting verb and is placed outside (" "). The tense of the Reporting verb is never changed.
  2. The exact words of the speaker are marked off by the inverted commas, and are called direct speech. The speech within the quotation is separated from the reporting portion by a comma.
  3. In the direct speech the first word after the inverted commas begins with a capital letter.
  4. 'that' has been placed before the indirect statement.
