Answer:

Yes It feels more professional and formal to call people by the last name. Calling their first name may sound odd and informal. But it's applicable to the ones at your office or any elder (who may a stranger, your teacher etc.) You wouldn't probably call your friends with their last names as it may sound odd!

I wouldn't say it is wrong to call a person by their last name.

Bur here are few things to consider.

  • The place you're brought up in.
  • Your culture.
  • Personal opinion.

While it may be okay to address someone by their last name in a particular place / society, it may be considered rude somewhere else.

Take this for example, when I visited my aunt's place during the summer, I happened to witness this conversation. FYI.. my aunt is a teacher and she was telling Uncle how addressing her as "Ma'am" (people and students included) outside the school should be avoided. In her defense, she asserted that, if and when they do so, there is this barrier (of sorts) that prevents them from fully expressing themselves (to her). Uncle, on the other hand, didn't agree and said it was normal and people addressed them that way to show their respect. It was a loooonng conversation and I wouldn't want to bore you with the details.

I'd have to be honest here, although she's my aunt, I address her as Ma'am (maybe because she taught me so yep.)

That said, whether it is calling someone by their last name or simply addressing them as Sir/Ma'am, and though it may not seem that big of a deal, if we're not careful, we may end up hurting their sentiments.

Note: This is just my POV and personally speaking, I don't really mind whether people call me by my first or last name. But, like I mentioned above, opinions differ.
