We know that √16 = 4 and √17 = √(42 +12 )
mark point A representing 4 on number line .Now construct AB of unit length perpendicular to Oa .Then taking O as centre and OB as radius. Draw an arc intersecting number line at C .C is represented as √17.

Taking O&A represents zero & 4 respectively on the no.line
STEP :- 1
Draw a right angled ΔOBA , ∠A= 90°
OA=4 & AB=1
using Pythagoras theo,
OB²=OA²+AB²=4²+1²=17
∴OB=√17
STEP:2
Taking OA² as center & OB radius,draw an ARC to cut the no.line at ∠c
OC= √17
