Steps of construction:-

• First make a line segment AB of 1 unit ...that 1 unit can be 2 -3-5 cm any but take it fixed.
• Now, take the same measure of 1 unit on compass and mark an arc on the line BC.
• Join point C to B .
• By pythagoras theorem , you will get AC as root 2 units.
• Now to mark this measure , put the compass on point A and take AC 's measure.
• Then, mark an arc which will meet at an extended line AB .
• Mark the intersection point O.
• Here , AO represents root 2 units on number line.
