Concept-

A number line is a way of visually representing numbers on a straight line. The line is divided into several parts with a unit distance between them. By plotting a number on a number line, we can easily distinguish two numbers and compare them.

Given-

A fraction in the form of p/q.

Find-

Represent the fraction -3/4 and 1/2 on the same number line.

Solution-

Steps to represent -3/4 on a number line-

  • First, we mark the origin and the integer value -1 on the number line, since proper rational numbers lie between 0 and -1.
  • Next, we will divide this area into 4 equal parts.
  • To indicate -3/4, move three parts to the left of zero.

Steps to represent 1/2 on a number line-

  • First, we mark the origin and the integer value 1 on the number line, since proper rational numbers lie between 0 and 1.
  • Next, we will divide this area into 2 equal parts.

To indicate 1/2, move one part to the right of zero.

Hence, this is how we represent any fraction on the number line.

Figure of representation of -3/4 and 1/2 ae given in the below picture.
