a bit can store either a one or zero
a combination of 8 bits is called byte.
The name bit come from binary digits as computer memory can only store 2 states( on/off ) represented as (0/1)
for example: to store number 8 in computer memory you need 4 bits. as binary value of 8 is 1000
and each bit can store a one /zero we need 4 bits (1, 0,0,0) to represent number 8
