Mobile phones are a fairly common feature in today’s world. Yet, several decades of research and inventions were required for this modern marvel to come into existence. The predecessors to the mobile phone are as follows:

1908 – The Oakland Transcontinental Aerial Telephone and Power Company claimed to have manufactured a wireless calling service. When charged with fraud and deceit, it dropped plans of mass manufacturing their invention.

1918 – The Germans began experimenting with military level wireless communications between various outposts along the German frontier. Their experiments carried on for nearly two decades, at the end of which, they had developed a fairly passable audio reception over long distances.

1939 – The Second World War made extensive use of wireless communications between army outposts, air forces, submarines, ground troops and paratroopers. Research conducted during this period fuelled much of the later discoveries and modifications.

1946 – The Bell laboratories were credited with the first mobile wireless service shortly after which, AT&T also came out with their own wireless service.

1961 - Leonid Kupriyanovich, a USSR scientist, is credited by many to have developed the first pocket sized mobile phone. The first mobile developed in the erstwhile Soviet nation was the Altai.
