Let john have x marbles so, jivanti have 45-x marbles

Now, they lost 5 marbles so,

john have= x-5 marbles

and jivanti have= 40-x

now, Accoding to question

(40-x) (x-5) =124

now, 40x-200-x^2+5x=124

=>-x^2+45x-200=124

=>x^2-45x+200=-124

=>x^2-45x+324=0

Now, by solving it by quadratic formula

We would get the number of marbles john and jivanti had.
