Representation of molecule with Lewis notations.
Explanation:
- To draw Lewis notations or structures, the following step must be followed:
- Count the total number of valence electron present in the atoms of the compound.
- Draw the skeletal structure.
- Draw bonds in such a way that, each atom attain octet.
- Accordingly, the given molecule is water which has a chemical formula .
- The atoms present in water are 1 atom of oxygen and 2 atoms of hydrogen. Oxygen has 6 valance electrons whereas as two hydrogen atoms are present it has 2 valence electrons. Thus total valence electron available is 8.
- The skeletal structure of water is H O H.
- To draw bonds, the atoms which donate an electron and gains electron must be identified.
- As oxygen has 6 valence electron, it needs 2 electrons to attain octet. Therefore it accepts electrons from both hydrogen atom and forms a single covalent bond.
- Thus the Lewis notation for water molecule formed looks like the image attached in the attachment.
