‘My Unknown Friend’ is a narrative by Canadian writer, Stephen Leacock (1869 – 1944).
The setting is a Pullman coach (an old-fashioned railroad sleeping car), in which the author was travelling. He meets another person who comes up to him, shake hands and starts talking as if they were good old friends, who used to meet up earlier. It is obvious that these ‘meetings’ happened some time back and there were several other friends, in their ‘group’, with whom neither of them had been in touch.
This style of writing is common with other story writers, where the setting is ‘uneasy, yet humorous’.
