The setting of the story ‘My Unknown Friend’, is a railroad car and two men who happen to enter into a friendly chat, as if they are old friends. At least one of them - the author, has no clue as to who the other person is or what he is talking about. But he is unwilling to give up and say that he does not know the man. And so, the conversation goes on, with the author feeling ill at ease about the whole thing.
Stephen Leacock’s (1869 – 1944) writing is similar to certain other writers, whose characters are ill at ease, yet the situation is humorous.
