There are minor gaps between the tracks of metro rail so that when it is required, linear expansion occur and they can expand in the free space. So by keeping a little amount of gap between the tracks they can prevent bending of the metro tracks and thus they can prevent derailment of the tracks. Intense research is being carried out in this field.
