Answer:

As the primary concern of the state was to reclaim more and more fallow and waste lands under cultivation we find gradual expansion of

agriculture from time to time and growth of a strong agrarian base. With the emergence of village settlements from the time of Mauryan ascendancy,

extensive monetization of economy increasing knowledge of agriculture and consequent growth of a strong agrarian base agriculture became the main

form of production labour . The proverbial fertility of Orissan soil is described by Hiuen Tsang in his account m. Growth of village settlements on river banks and grant of LIFE IN MEDIEVAL ORISSA

lands near perennial sources of water like Vapi <25> (stepped wells), Kulya

(canal)!26>, Kupa(well)(27> Puskarini (2S>, tadaga <29> contributed to the expansion

of agriculture. Besides krishta or cultivable land, we find references to arama

and udyana i.e. gardens and grooves m. These cultivate lands, gardens and

grooves produced various types of food grains, fruits and cash crops. Though

fruits, were grown in plenty both in Kalinga and odra Hiuen-Tsang writes that

odra produced bigger fruits than others parts of the country 13u. Likewise

Kalinga produced best quality of rice. In the inscriptional records of the

period we find frequent reference to various types of food grains like Mudga,

Kulatha, Masha, oilseeds like mustard (sasarpa) sesama (Tila) castor

(errands), cash crops like betel, Sugarcane and various types of fruits like

mango, plantain, Palmyra palm, date palm, jack fruit, wood apple, tamarind,

melon, black berry etc.

The abundance of raw materials from forest, agriculture, and sea

products like conch shell and cowry, mining and metallurgy resources all

combined together provided a solid economic base for the growth and

development of crafts industry and trade in Orissa from earliest times.
