Phaeophyceae or brown algae includes about 200 mostly marine species. They grow in tidal and sub tidal regions of colder seas. Their primary photosynthetic pigments are chl-a and c. The accumulation product is D mannitol (a sugar alcohol) and the reserve food material is laminarin.
