Let X be the number of votes secured by James

Number of scores secured by James’ competitor = X+3000

Given that votes scored by James is 49.5% of total votes,

That is X=49.5%(Total votes) or Total votes = X/49.5% [eq1]

Total votes = James votes + James’ competitors votes

Total votes = X + (X+30000)

From eq1

X/49.5% = X + X +30000

X/49.5% = 2X + 30000

X = (2X + 30000)*49.5/100

X = 0.99X + 14850

X-0.99X = 14850

0.01X = 14850

X = 14850/0.01

X = 1485000

From eq1 we know that Total votes = X/49.5%

Hence Total votes = 1485000/0.495

Total votes = 3000000
