Resistivity of two elements A and B are 1.62x10-8 Ωm and 520x10-8 Ωm respectively. Out of these name the element that can be used to make: i) Filament of electric bulb. ii) Wires for electrical transmission line. Justify?

Element B can be used to make filament of an electric bulb and element A can be used to make wires of electrical transmission line as the element having less resistivity will give less resistance than the element having more resistivity.

'B' can be used as a filament of bulb and 'A' can be used in wires.

  • Element 'B' has a higher resistivity (1.62 × 10-⁸) than element 'A' (520 × 10-⁸). This means that the resistance per unit length and area of 'B' is more than that of 'A'.
  • Materials like 'B' with higher resistivity obstruct current and can be used in heating devices and as filaments of electrical bulbs.
  • 'A' having lower resistivity offers less resistance to the flow of current and hence can be used as wires for electrical transmission lines.
