In physiology, respiration is defined as the movement of oxygen from the outside environment to the cells within tissues, and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.
Stages are:
BREATHING or ventilation.
EXTERNAL RESPIRATION, which is the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between inhaled air and the blood.
INTERNAL RESPIRATION, which is the exchange of gases between the blood and tissue fluids.
CELLULAR RESPIRATION.

Aerobic cellular respiration consists of three stages: glycolysis, citric acid cycle (Krebs Cycle), and electron transport with oxidative phosphorylation. Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and involves the oxidation or splitting of glucose into pyruvate.
