The volume of remaining air in the lungs after forced maximal expiration is called residual volume. A reduction in residual volume enhances alveolar ventilation which is the actual amount of air available for participating in gas exchange. Excess of this residual volume in the lungs decreases the efficiency of gas exchange and hence reduces respiration efficiency. Also, an increase in the amount of residual volume leads to diseases such as emphysema that traps air in the chest. The residual volume can be deadly only if it is present in amounts more than its normal amount. Otherwise, it does not affect respiration process.
