Under the Rescue Act, rescue operations cover:

the handling of emergency callsthe issuing of warnings to the publicthe combating of impending accidentsthe protection of people, property and the environment against danger, and the rescue of accident victimsthe extinguishing of fires and damage limitationcommand, communication, service and other support functions relating to these tasks.

The country is divided into 22 rescue service regions. Rescue departments carry out the duties of rescue services in their respective regions. Volunteer, institutional, industrial and military fire brigades (contract fire brigades) also participate in performing rescue service duties by agreement between the brigades and the regional rescue services.

There are about 90 full-time fire brigades operating 24/7 and about 730 other fire brigades. About 4,000 full-time employees and 14,600 people employed by contract fire brigades take part in rescue operations.

Fire brigades start practical rescue operations within minutes. In 90% of accidents where urgent assistance is needed, help can be sent to the scene of an accident within 20 minutes of the emergency call no matter where in the country it happens.
