The revolt of 1857, or the first war of independence, was an outcome of many factors, which can be attributed to both British and Indians. People had started believing in (the myth about) the greasing of the cartridges of the new enfield rifle by cow or pig fat.

Assuming it to be the revolt of 1857, I would like to present some of the facts in front of you and then let you decide whether it's appropriate to call it the First war of Independence or not..

The revolt started from Meerut, confining itself to a few pockets of Northern and Central India . As a result, three presidencies remained totally unaffacted forget about entire India.

The Punjab warriors and Gurkha army fought on the British army as there was no national conciousness at that time. They were merely paid soldiers of Bengal army.

Be it Kunwar Singh from Bihar or Tatya Tope, ,Nansaheb ,Baiza Bai or Jhansi ki Rani, all of them were fighting for their own regions to make them autonomous or to defend it. Not for the independence of entire British territories in India.

Now coming to the answer of this question..

Then, these were the following results:—

British crown proclaimed India as her colony and Indians as her subjects.

British direct rule established which was hitherto being carried out on de facto basis.

End of British East India company's rule.

All the acquired and controlled territories of rebels were gradually reconquered.

Large scale blood shed ,not just of soldiers but of civilians as well.

Reorganisation of the entire Indian British army here the formula of “divide and rule” was first experimented.

Trial of Bahadur Shah Zafar .killing of the royal princes ( Salatin) and other members of the royal family.

Mass level destruction of the Red Fort. What we see today is just one — third part of the original red fort which was a walled city within a city.

The entire City of Delhi was planned once again especially the Red Fort complex for ex. building of an “espalanade” what we call today parade ground in the same area.

The seat of secretary of state( with his India office) and Viceroyalty of viceroy ( Queen's special representative) were created as a governing authority for India.
