Prabhat Kumar mukhopadhyay was a contemporary of rabindranath tagore. He was a famous writer. He wrote many short stories.
The price of flowers is one of his very sensitive and soul stirring stories. In this story the writer takes us to a foriegn land where he meets a thirteen year old girl and her mother. The girl works as a typist and her mother works in a bakery. As he belongs to India they think he can predict future by looking in crytell ball. They ask the author about Frank who is Maggie's brother and is in army.Frank was posted on Punjab As an army officer.
They want to ask him if he can predict about Frank whether he is fine or not but he says that Frank is fine but later everyone gets to know that Frank was dead. The author feels embarrassed and is about to leave for India when Maggie gives him a shilling that she has earned by working aand asks the author to buy flowers for Frank's grave.
The moments in the story give you perfect goosebumps and thrills. You feel for the poor girl and her mother. This shows the power of writing and well written characters.
As it is said that things change in India we can say that the writer may be saying this as he gets to know about Frank's death and he would be thinking that Maggie and her mother won't be same with him now.Their relation was destroyed because of one lie.Like the weather in India which is very unpredictable and it changes after every six months. The situations in our life also change and our relations also change.

Prabhat KM was the best Bengali literature and was also a novelist. He wrote the most heart touching and warming story 'The price of flowers'. It is about a poor family from India staying in London. Mr and Mrs Clifford have 2 children Maggie (daughter) and Frank (son). Frank is a soldier in India and Maggie is just thirteen years old working at the Civil Service stores as a typist. Maggie and her mother live together in a small house. Maggie invite a person called Gupta (whom she meets at the restaurant). Maggie introduced Mr Gupta to her mother. Her mother was really happy and jest. "It is neither the same everywhere nor the same all the year round in India" Mrs Clifford said these words to Mr Gupta when she was saying about how India is according to what they heard from some other Indians. So she asked Mr Gupta about India how it is as in a concern of her son as he hasn't send letters for a long time.
