Answer:

Tolstoy Farm was the first ashram initiated and organized by Mohandas Gandhi during his South African movement. In 1910, the ashram served as the headquarters of the campaign of satyagraha against discrimination against Indians in Transvaal, where it was located.[1] The ashram was named after Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy, whose 1894 book, The Kingdom of God Is Within You, greatly influenced Gandhi's science of nonviolence.

TOLSTOY FARM

- Mahatma Gandhi

'Tolstoy Farm' is an extract from the autobiog raphy of Gandhiji, 'The Story of My Experiments with Truth'. Tolstoy Farm was a community of Indians started by Gandhiji in Transvaaal South Africa, in 1910. Young sters, both boys and girls belonging to different religions and social backgrounds from India lived there together. Gandhiji intended to educate them. But it was difficult to find qualified Indian teachers who were ready to work in a rural area with a small salary. Gandhiji was sure that true education could be imparted only by parents. Hence he played the role of a father of the entire Tolsoty Farm inmates. He believed that the foundation of education was character building. So he started moral training for all the inmates. Apart from this, vocational training also found place in Gandhiji's system of education. Carpen try, cooking etc were also taught to all. All sorts of works from cooking to scavenging were done by the inmates themselves. All the inmates developed good physique by ample physical exercise. When youngsters hesitated to fulfill their duties, Gandhiji corrected them with strong conviction 'how significant work was'. There was al ways a teacher to co-operate and work along with them whenever the inmates did any work.

The education system Gandhiji envisaged provided moral training, physical training and vocational training. There was good rapport between teachers and the young students. The education imparted at Tolstoy Farm enabled the inmates to develop a sound mind, body and spirit.
