I first read this book during my senior year of high school. It made a very big impression on me in regards to what I ought to aspire for my love relationships to be like, if only in part. 8 years later I'm glad that it's equally if not even more powerful and invoking of emotion. O. Henry's poetic prose highlights the transcendentally joyful nature of true love while momentarily grounding the story with lines such as "Forget the hashed metaphor." or "He enfolded his Della. For ten seconds let us regard with discreet scrutiny some inconsequential object in the other direction." to emphasize that the euphoric intimacy shared between lovers lies within it's simplicity and that boundless care and infinite devotion can be fully encapsulated within something as simple as an embrace. Jim and Della express the truest meaning of Christmas and love: an absolute act of self-sacrifice for the sake of making sweeter the life of another.
