Answer:
Liam O' Flaherty's story 'His First Flight', speaks in volumes about the necessity of being self-confident and brave in life. A young seagull is hungry but has been left alone by his family. He watches his family eating without having anything left for him to eat. He could not fly like everyone in his family as he lacked confidence in taking his 'first flight'. His parents had tried plenty of ways to make him fly but he didn’t as he strongly believed that his wings wouldn’t support him if he tried flying. He watches his mother tearing fish, which makes him angry. On crying out loud, his mother approaches him with the fish but keeps it out of his reach. This motivates him to dive. He dives in desperation and suddenly realizes that he has finally taken his first flight and his wings are supporting him. The poem throws light on how the family pushes him to take the first step towards flying by giving him a cold shoulder. It shows how the mother motivates the seagull to fly by keeping the fish out of his reach. The poem throws light on the importance of courage which gives rise self-confidence in oneself and independence.
