Explanation:
IMPERIAL POLICY OF SAMUDRAGUPTA
Samudragupta, the second Emperor of Gupta Dynasty, is known to be one of India’s best rulers. His brilliant leadership and valiant victories earned him the title of ‘Napoleon of India’. According to respectable professor Dr. H. C. Roychowdhury, Samudragupta was more versatile than king Ashoka. Ashoka was proficient in scriptures only, but the versatility of Samudragupta lies in the fact that Samudragupta was proficient in all facets of art and culture. Samudragupta was the real Maharajadhiraja ( King of Kings), because he politically unified India and brought it under his power. His territories extended from the Himalayas in the North to the River Narmada in the South and from Brahmaputra River in the East to the Yamuna River in the West.
The Allahabad Prashasti is the primary source of the reign of Samudragupta. It was written by Harisena, a court official and a scribe. The eulogy provided by the Prashasti, if it is to be taken literally, provides an impressive list of Kings and regions that succumbed to Samudragupta’s triumphal march across various parts of the subcontinent.
According to R. S. Sharma, the places and countries conquered by Samudragupta can be divided into five groups. Group one includes the princes of the Ganga – Yamuna Doab. The second group were the republics in the frontier of the Gupta Empire. The third group included the forest kingdoms known as the Atavikas, situated in the Vindhyan region. The fourth included twelve rulers of Southern India, who were conquered and liberated. And finally, there were the Shakas and Kushanas in Afghanistan. All these regions were strategically brought under the Gupta Rule.
