Q.7. Explain why pancreas is both an exocrine and endocrine gland.
Answers
Answer:
1)●The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate controlling heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance. Its correct functioning depends on a good supply of iodine from the diet.
2)●A goitre is a swelling in the neck resulting from an enlarged thyroid gland.
●If your goiter is from iodine deficiency, increasing your iodine intake from food or supplements may help reduce the goiter's size.
3)●Adrenaline is mainly secreted by adrenal gland.
4)Location of glands:-
●Adrenal glands– top of both kidneys
●Thyroid gland–low of the front of the neck
●Pituitary gland–base of the brain.
5)●Metamorphosis is a biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's body structure through cell growth and differentiation
6)●Metamorphosis is controlled by ecdysone hormone which is a prothoracicotropic hormone. It is secreted by the prothoracic gland and triggers moulting. It activates tissue to promote metamorphosis. Pheromone is a chemical in animals produces which changes the behaviour of another animal of same species while thyroxine helps in the metamorphosis in frogs.
7)●Exocrine glands are those glands which deliver their secretions to the target through ducts. Exocrine glands mainly secrete digestive juices or enzymes of various kind. Endocrine glands are those glands which release their secretions directly into the blood which carries it to the target sites. Endocrine glands mainly secrete hormones. Since pancreas secretes both digestive juices and hormones and has exocrine and endocrine parts, it is known as an exo- endocrine gland.
