Revision Test 1
Read the following passage carefully :
Japan, like China, was another Far Eastern Country which
was cut off from the rest of the world until the middle of the
nineteenth century. It was even more isolated than China. There
was no foreign trade, no foreign visitors were allowed to enter
the country and no Japanese were allowed to leave.
Japan had an emperor, but the real ruler was the SHOGUN.
the commander of the army. He controlled the land and the roads
and even how the Japanese dressed. His rule was enforced by
warriors called SAMURAI
Japan's isolation ended suddenly. In July 1853, four United
States warships sailed into Tokyo Bay. Two were steamships,
and when the Japanese saw black smoke pouring from the
funnels they called them the "the Black Ships". The ships.
brought a message for the emperor: he must open his ports
to American ships: if he did not; a larger American force would be sent.
