"Revolt of 1857 brought people closer and it helped to raise the sense of nationality because of the administrative, political, socio-religion, economic and military causes that made people work together.

The immediate cause becomes the greased cartridge with the Enfield rifle that makes the revolt broke with Mangal Pandey’s incident.

It spread in North Delhi like fire.

The British had ruled India for almost 2 centuries. The people of India were stripped from their rights and were treated as slaves.

But, during the revolt of 1857, political and social changes made by the British rule resulted in the oppression of the people of all classes. Thus, giving rise to a wide spread dissatisfaction resulting in national consciousness.

Factors leading to the rise of nationalism:

  • Unity among the people
  • Language barrier and western style education
  • Development in mass media
  • Exploitation of the economy
  • Other events occurring worldwide.

This was the first step of struggle for independence.

Bal Gangadhar tilak was called as the father of nationalism in India.
