Indirect/Reported speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I am going horse - riding." (Direct)

She said that she was going horse - riding. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in reported/indirect form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'can' changes to 'could', 'will' changes to 'would', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'yesterday' changes to 'the day before' and many other words will have to be made.

Father : "Son, is it raining outside?" (Direct)

Father asked his son whether it was raining outside. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
