1) They lack an aquarium in their room.

=> We avoid "not" to change the sentence into affirmative, hence we use the word "lack".

2) Are we not waiting for the chief guest?

=> When changing into interrogative, an assertive and affirmative sentence becomes negative with the use of "not".

3) The king had been giving her a reward.
