Sojourner Truth, an activist and former slave, delivered one of history's most remarkable addresses on the junction of women's rights and black freedom on May 29, 1851.

Speaking at the Ohio Women's Convention, Truth utilised her identity to highlight how both movements failed black women. According to historical records, she repeatedly asked, "Ain't I a woman?"

  • Several ministers* were present on the following of the Women rights Convention and were not hesitant about expressing their belief in man's dominance over women.
  • One claimed'superior intelligence,' another the'manhood of Christ,' and still another the'sin of our first mother.'
  • Sojourner Truth abruptly rose off her place in the church's corner. Sojourner made his way to
  • the podium and gradually removed her sunbonnet Her 6 frame lorded over everyone in the room.
  • She started speaking in a rich, booming voice:...'That man over there thinks that women should  be assisted into carriages, hoisted over ditches, and given the greatest seat in the house.
  • Nobody  ever assists me onto carriages, through mud puddles, or offers me the finest spot!
  • And aren't I a woman?'
  • Sojourner stepped up to their full height. 'Take a look at me! Take a look at my arm.' She extended her formidable biceps and cleared her right arm. 'I have ploughed, planted, and collected into barns.' And no guy could overpower me. And aren't I a lady?'
  • 'I could labour and eat the same amount as a man - when I could obtain it - and yet suffer the lash!'
  • And am I not a lady? I've had children and watched the majority of children being sold to slavery,, and then when I screamed out in motherly despair, only Jesus heard me.
  • And aren't I a lady?' The women in the crowd burst out laughing.
