  • This is in accordance with the agreement of the subject with the verb.
  • Singular subjects are always followed by singular verbs whereas plural subjects are always followed by plural verbs.
  • However, there are certain rules in certain cases. For example, whenever there are two subjects(nouns) in a sentence joined by 'as well as', the verb agrees with the first subject.  
  • In this case, the verb will be according to the first subject, which is singular and so we have used a singular verb.
