This toy belongs to my dog. This is my dog's toy.

My parents took that decision. It was my parents' decision.

I couldn’t believe the story the boy was telling. I couldn’t believe the boy's story.

The population of the world is increasing. The world's population is increasing.

The books Dan Brown writes are all bestselling novels. Dan Brown's books are all bestselling novels.

Adding an apostrophe (') or an apostrophe along with an 's' ('s) is a way of showing possession. So, ‘ and ‘s are genitives.

Usually, simply adding 's is enough, like the boy's story or the world's population.

However, if the word ends with an 's', then we do not add another 's'. In such cases, we simply place an apostrophe mark after the ‘s’, as in my parents' decision or the chairs' paint.
