This statement has been taken from the story "The Rattrap" in which there is a peddler who sells rattraps and according to him the whole world was a rattrap, in which things that gives us happiness like food, shelter, enjoyment, jewelry etc were referred to as "riches and joys" and "baits" out here referred to the trap that people were living in that is cities and villages.

Everything is temporary.

Right after taking birth till the time of our death we all strive towards getting a happy and luxurious life.

We look for material happiness like money, clothes, house, cars etc rather than the actual ones.

But as we grow older and more mature and are nearing the time of leaving this world, we realize that all these, richness, joy, competition, quarrel, tussle are meaningless and are mere baits to keep us hold on to this world.
